One morning last week i was just getting ready to leave for work
and something down below my neighbors yard caught my eye
something flew in i could not believe it 5 palliated woodpeckers
they hung around for about 10 minutes and i had a chance to catch a couple
in the trees haven't gone through all the shots just pulled this one up quick
shot with a 7D 100-400 canon lens at 400 mm 800 ISO

I was up at phantom lake in crex a week ago and all the swans were on the south end

of the lake it was the only part that was open its looking like winter is setting in

and i am sure they will be leaving this week. I have a shot of one getting ready to

took a trip to crex because i had sunshine wow! took some pictures
of sanhill cranes and some other birds in flight used different settings for
the different focus settings everything worked pretty good as you can see

CANON 7D AT CREX

On my last trip up to crex i left my canon Mk 3at home
because i wanted to be forced to try a canon 7d.
it was very cloudy and misting rain on and off all day.
Did manage to get a few shots of sandhill cranes .
The 7D did a great job all day i shot most shots a 400 iso
and shot jpeg and raw . The photos in the blog here are all
jpeg out of the camera no processing in photoshop or canon's software.
I was extremely impressed with the fast focusing and servo tracking of the 7D
i think this camera is a winner all the way. I used a 500 f4 canon + 1.4 ex
I have a photo here of 3 sandhills flying towards the trees and the first one is
just entering the trees and the camera held focus don't know if my Mk 3 would have
as good a job. I am not saying this camera is better than a Mk3 but there are a lot of
things you can do with the Mk 3 in the menus that the 7D doesn't have in its menu.
I would rather have the Mk 3 to photo a wedding first and the 7D to back it up. But for the
extra reach and build and focus system in the 7D this is the camera for me for birding..

I LIVE IN WYOMING MN. SO THE TRIP IS REALLY EASY
I GET TO CANAL PARK IN ABOUT HOUR AND HALF.

PICNIC THERE WERE ABOUT TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE IN

ACTION DOWNTOWN .WE STOPPED AT BIRCH TERRACE RESTAURANT
NICE PLACE AND VERY NICE CROWD THERE.

I WAS AT CREX MEADOWS THIS WEEKEND AND THERE IS HARDLY ANY WATER AFTER PHANTOM LAKE.
EVERYTHING IS DRYING UP REALLY SAD I WONDER
IF IT WILL AFFECT THE MIGRATION THIS OCTOBER HEADING SOUTH.
I WAS LAST HERE JULY 4TH AND THE PICTURES I TOOK THIS WEEK SHOW HOW DRY IT GOT IN JUST 3 WEEKS THIS AREA HAD LOONS AND SWANS ALL OVER THE PLACE

Out of the fog came these two swans while up at crex meadows one morning.
not to much going on this week thought i would run up to crex again
Saturday and see what's going on up there and on the way back
stop at Dales drive in the old A&W root beer drive drive- in in Grantsburg
best Angus hamburgers i ever had.. and the ice cream malts out of the 50s
if your ever up there you have to stop nice to not have to stop at a chain restaurant
and by the way they have car hops also you can eat inside or in your car or take it to go..

Been a while since I have posted anything jammed my
knee been on crutches for a week this is the best i can
do for now on photos hope to get out this weekend
and visit my eagle family in Marine. The tree swallow was
a surprise on my deck one morning they are really colorful.
The blue jays are always around under the deck picking at
seeds that drop from the feeders.. Until we meet again.........

WE LIVE AND GOT TO RED WING COVELL PARK IN ONE HOUR
20 MINUTES REALLY GOOD TIME NO SPEEDING EITHER FOUND
A SHORT CUT BETWEEN HASTINGS AND RED WING..
IT WAS VERY WINDY AND THE EAGLES WERE PERCHED IN THE TREES
MOST OF THE TIME. LOTS OF PHOTOGRAPHERS AND CAMERAS
AND SPOTTING SCOPES. MET A GREAT PERSON THERE NAME OF
GERRY SIBELL HE HAD A LENS THAT MADE MINE LOOK LIKE A POINT
AND SHOOT HA! I HAVE A 300MM WITH A 2X EXTENDER ON IT
HE HAD A REAL 600MM WITH A EXTENDER ON IT AND SAID HE DIDN'T

I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE HOW FAR THE EAGLES WERE AWAY
THAT YOU CAN GET A CLEAR SHOT SO I PUT MY DOUBLER ON
AND GOT AS CLOSE AS I COULD TO WHERE THEY WERE
FLYING . I THINK AS THE SNOW MELTS A PERSON CAN
GET DOWN THE RIVER ON FOOT A LITTLE CLOSER.
ONCE IN A WHILE A COUPLE WILL COME UP TO WHERE
WE WERE AND YOU HAVE TO BE READY ITS OVER QUICK.
SO THAT'S ABOUT IT UNTIL NEXT WEEK WEATHER PERMITTING

FRIDAY MORNING LEFT FOR COVELL PARK IN RED WING MINNESOTA
AROUND 8:30 AM. GOT THERE AROUND 10:00. MOST OF THE EAGLES
WERE IN THE TREES I COUNTED AROUND 20 OF THEM. TALKED TO A
FEW PEOPLE THERE WITH THEIR CAMERAS AND THEY HAD ARRIVED
THERE AROUND 7:00 AM. AND SAID THE EAGLES WERE REALLY ACTIVE
AND DIVING AND FEEDING ON THE SMALL FISH IN THE RIVER.
SO I HAD HEARD THAT THE EAGLES FEED EARLY AFTER SUNRISE
AND LATE IN THE DAY BEFORE SUNSET. THE REST OF THE TIME
THEY SIT IN THE TREES AND I FOUND THAT TO BE TRUE SO A LITTLE
LATE FOR ME. HERE IS A SHOT OF THE RIVER WITH THE BLUFF IN THE
BACKGROUND AND THE EAGLES ARE PERCHED ALL DOWN THE RIVER ON
THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OT THE BANK. HARD TO SEE BY THE TIME I USED
MY WIDE ANGLE LENS TO CAPTURE THE RIVER.

WELL I HAVE THE WINTER BOREDOM SO I HAVE A PHOTO OF A CHICKADEE AT THE FEEDER
IT IS A EXPERIMENT OF SORTS. I USED A 1.3 CROP CAMERA WITH A 2X+1.4 EXTENDER IN UNISON JUST TO SEE IF IT WORKS. IT IS A TRICK TO GET MANUAL FOCUS VERY SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD... PLUS TRIPOD
THE CHICKADEE WAS AT 50 FEET.

BIRDS BIRDS AND MORE REPOLLS

Hi everyone since my last post we have now around 200-300 common redpolls coming to the feeders.
I think everyone is experiencing the same thing at the feeders.
I am going through about 10-15 pounds of thistle a week and it looks like most of it is on the ground below the feeder going to be a big clean up this spring. Have a picture of one of the little devils.

HELLO!!! EVERYONE SEEMS TO HAVE COMMON REDPOLL LITTLE FRIENDS AT THE FEEDERS RIGHT NOW. AND I THOUGHT I WAS SPECIAL
ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO I MENTIONED TO MY WIFE BOY DO WE HAVE A LOT OF GOLD FINCHES AT OUR FEEDERS. THEN I LOOKED A LITTLE CLOSER AND SAID OH BOY I THINK THEY ARE CHIPPING SPARROWS. WE ARE GOING THROUGH 10 POUNDS OF THISTLE FOR SPARROWS DON'T GET ME WRONG I LOVE ALL THE BIRDS BUT SPARROWS HMMMMMMM I NOTICED SOME OF THEM WHERE VERY COLORFUL
SO I TOOK A PICTURE OF ONE OF THE MALES AND SHOWED MIKE MY FRIEND AT WORK
OF MIKE AND LIZ BLOG AND HE SAID HEY THIS IS A COMMON REDPOLL . I FOUND OUT THAT THEY ARE FROM NORTHERN CANADA AND ALASKA AND MIGRATE DOWN HERE WHEN THE WINTERS ARE HARSH AND THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF SEEDS AND FOOD.
SO RIGHT NOW I HAVE ABOUT 200 BEHIND MY HOUSE WHICH BUTTS UP TO A HUGE WOODS. THEY COME ABOUT 5-6 TIMES A DAY AND JUST SWARM AROUND ARE DECK
IT IS UNBELIVEABLE THEY WAY THEY COME HERE.. SO I WOULD LIKE TO SHOW YOU A COUPLE OF SHOTS OF THE PRETTY ONES ....

Hello everyone been a while since I posted anything been kind of busy and the blogs look so good I am intimidated a little. I drove up to big lake Saturday to visit my daughter and see my grand children thought I would stop off at SEASONAL VIEWING PARK . SWAN CITY I have never seen anything like this ever.. Ducks, trumpeter swans , and most of all the great people that where there enjoying the day with us. lots of people. We got there around 10:30 in the morning it was around 37 degrees it was so great after the cold temperatures we have had for a while.They have the best hot chocolate according to my wife Debbie.
had one of the best Saturdays I have had this winter for sure ....
